Controversy she fueled
In her sworn testimony on June 28, Hutchinson claimed that when Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal attorney, was there and the Save America March was being organized, she overheard conversations regarding Oath Keepers and Proud Boys.
Some of the leaders of both organizations subsequently faced seditious conspiracy charges for their alleged involvement in the attack on the US Capitol on January 6.
Meadows and Giuliani both requested pardons from the president, according to Hutchinson.
She had previously informed the committee that Scott Perry, Louie Gohmert, Andy Biggs, Matt Gaetz, and others had all requested pardons.
Hutchinson claimed that Trump and Meadows were warned of the January 6 event that some people were armed, including with guns, and could not enter the rally because of magnetometers.
Trump made an attempt to get the magnetometers taken out and said he didn’t mind if his supporters had firearms since “They’re not coming to hurt me.”
The committee was made aware of people carrying guns, including AR-15s, by police radio broadcasts.
Hutchinson testified that Tony Ornato, the then-White House deputy chief of staff, had told her that when Trump got in the presidential SUV following his rally and attempted to drive to the Capitol as his supporters marched there.
His lead Secret Service agent Robert Engel told him it was too dangerous and that they were returning to the White House.
Hutchinson asserted that Ornato told her that Trump became agitated, attempted to grab the wheel of the car, and lunged at Engel’s clavicles.
She claimed that Engel was present when Ornato described the incident and never disputed his account.
Three days after Hutchinson’s testimony, CNN reported that it had spoken with two Secret Service agents who had since February 2021 heard tales of the incident from a variety of other agents, including Trump’s driver.
