Iyanla Vanzant was born on 13 September 1953 in New York City, the U.S. Her father, Horace Harris was a petty criminal, and her mother, Sarah Jefferson was a railroad car maid.

Vanzant’s mother died in 1955 due to breast cancer. She then started living with her paternal relatives. Her childhood passed in trouble and a very uncomfortable.

In search of a good living, she found a man with whom she fell in love.

Vanzant found herself pregnant at age of 16 and birthed 3 children by 21. She married her loving man at 18 but he was physically abusive and thus she left him in 1980.

She expressed the period in an article written for Essence, “I accumulated several black eyes, three fractured ribs, a broken jaw, a displaced uterus, and something far worse: the death of my personhood. In a fit of depression, I attempted suicide.”

Her works in the legal field led her to write a book name Tapping the Power Within A Path to Self-Empowerment for Black Women which teaches pre-employment skills to marginalized women.

The book was originally published on 1 May 1992. Shortly, she released 15 titles of which four of them were listed on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

Vanzant’s efforts paid her more when she was nominated for NAACP Image Awards for her book.

Later, Oprah Winfrey, a renowned American TV Producer, Talk Show Host, and Author invited Vanzant on her show. She appeared 20 times on her show from 1998 to 1999.

Problems continued in Vanzant’s life as book publishing contracts were canceled and her husband, Adeyemi filed for divorce.

In addition to this, her child, Gemmia expired away of colon cancer at age of 34 in 2003.
