Whatever happened to Jennifer Connelly? The beautiful actress you remember watching on your childhood cults favorites like Labyrinth and The Rocketeer?

You’ll be happy to know that she’s still a working actress, although she’s moved on to less lighthearted roles now.

Jennifer Connelly is an Oscar-winning actress who played roles in big-budgeted feature movies and independent roles. Though now, it has been reported that most of her time is taken up by her husband and their children.

Let’s roll back to all her previous achievements that we all know her very well for:

Dario Argento’s Phenomena (1985) – Her Earliest Roles

Jennifer Connelly

Jennifer’s earliest roles were played in one episode of the TV series Tales of the Unexpected (1982), a music video Duran Duran: Union of the Snake (1983), and finally a film Once Upon a Time in America (1984) where she played a young protagonist.

Because of the latter, she was once again cast in a new feature film role in Phenomena (1985), which is a horror/gory movie full of corpses.

That would get her started toward stardom while cast in Labyrinth (1986), a classic, though it was also critically disliked. However, despite the negative reaction, the film gave Connelly fame for years.

The Rocketeer (1991) – Where She Was Supposed to Become a Star

After Labyrinth, Connelly found roles in some lighthearted films like Some Girls (1988) and Seven Minutes in Heaven (1986), and The Hot Spot (1990).

It seemed unlikely that she would get some serious roles, however, because of her potential, she was cast for the movie The Rocketeer (1991) and set up for Hollywood’s next big thing.

However, despite the studio’s expectation to make this film a hit with other summer blockbusters like Terminator 2 (1991) and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), that didn’t happen and the movie turned out to be a flop.

Her Career Slowed Down After Hulk (2008)

Connelly started shooting for the movie Hulk (2008) by the time she won an Oscar for her role in A Beautiful Mind (2001). Connelly was excited to work with the director Ang Lee.

However, the Hulk also failed to attract the audience as expected.

That not only tarnished the reputation of the Marvel character but also Connelly’s career prospects. Despite being an Oscar winner herself, Hulk actually deflated her career negatively.

Connelly Married Her Co-Star

She met her husband Paul Bettany on the set of A Beautiful Mind where they became really good friends. They began a romantic relationship and got married in 2003 and had two children.

She and her husband then worked together in another movie as co-stars: Creation (2009). After this film, she shifted her focus away from acting to spending time with her children.

Voice of Karen in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Surprisingly, Connelly has also taken up acting in roles where you can’t see her face.

In movie 9 (2009), she provided voice to character 7, and also an artificial intelligence Karen in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Connelly as a Villain; Can You Imagine?

This is a different role for Connelly; an evil Chiren in Alita: Battle Angel (2019), which is based on an eponymous manga series from the 1990s.

The movie garnered a $200 million budget and the expertise of James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez.

This movie showed Connelly’s eagerness to take part in diverse roles from independent films and big-budget Hollywood movies.

Her Most Recent Roles

Connelly then starred in a TV series Snowpiercer in the year 2020 as Melanie Cavill, a deuteragonist who is the voice of the train carrying the last remaining humans on Earth.

She is absent for most of seasons 2 and 3, but this role shows her exquisite acting throughout.

Then she was cast in Top Gun: Maverick (2022) as a love interest to Tom Cruise’s character. She plays the role of a single mom bringing new dimensions to a classic ‘80s scene.

Her most recent role was in a black comedy film namely Bad Behavior (2023), where her character spends time at a retreat and seeks enlightenment while dealing with her relationships with her family.

Wrapping Up

Connelly’s acting career has been a total roller-coaster ride; she has seen success in some films, and failures in others, but again she rose back up again.

It’s good to know that her role in the Top Gun sequel brought her back to the limelight. It just shows that she isn’t done with the acting world just yet.
