Patricia Helen Heaton is an American actress and comedian.

She is best known for her work on sitcoms, having portrayed Frances “Frankie” Heck on The Middle (1996-2005) and Debra Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond (2009–2018).

Everybody Loves Raymond earned Heaton two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and Patricia Heaton Parties earned her a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Culinary Program (2015–2016).

Early Life of Patricia Heaton

Patricia Heaton was born on March 4, 1958, in Bay Village, Ohio. She was raised and brought up in America.

She is the daughter of sportswriter for The Plain Dealer Chuck Heaton and Patricia (née Hurd).

Her mother died of an aneurysm when she was 12 years old. Heaton, the fourth of five children, was brought up as a devoted Catholic.

Heaton has one brother, Michael, who passed away in September 2022 at the age of 66. He was the “Minister of Culture” columnist for The Plain Dealer as well as a writer for the newspaper’s Friday Magazine.

Heaton also has three sisters: Sharon (who is currently a Dominican nun and the assistant registrar at Aquinas College in Nashville), Alice, and Frances.

She joined the Delta Gamma sorority while a student at Ohio State University. She subsequently earned a Bachelor of Arts in drama.

Heaton relocated to New York City in 1980 to study with William Esper, a drama instructor.  

After appearing on Broadway for the first time in the chorus of Don’t Get God Started in 1987, Heaton founded Stage Three with other students as an off-Broadway acting group.

Heaton went through the audition process to play Seinfeld’s, Elaine Benes.

Heaton attracted the attention of a casting director for the ABC drama Thirtysomething when Stage Three brought one of its productions to Los Angeles.

She was given the role of an oncologist, and from 1989 to 1991, she made six appearances on the show.

Additionally, Danny Phantom (1999), Matlock (1990), Party of Five (1996), and Alien Nation (1989) all made guest appearances on television (2004).

Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992), Beethoven (1992), The New Age (1994), and Space Jam are some of Heaton’s notable motion pictures (1996).

Back to You, a situation comedy on Fox, featured Heaton and Kelsey Grammer as co-stars beginning in September 2007. The program was terminated in May 2008.

Heaton made an appearance on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in season seven, where she assisted in constructing a house for a firefighter and his family.

Since 1990, Patricia Heaton has been married to English actor and filmmaker David Hunt.

They have four sons and four grandchildren.

Villard Books released her autobiography, Motherhood and Hollywood: How to Get a Job Like Mine, in 2002.

She experienced a “Protestant wilderness” following her divorce from her first husband, Constantine Yankoglu.

Heaton’s first marriage had been declared null and void by the Catholic Church as of June 2017, and she had rejoined the Catholic Church.

Politics

Conservative political views have been attributed to Heaton, who was a registered Republican up until 2021. She expressed her opposition to her party’s then-nominee for president, Donald Trump, in 2016.

After the election, she later claimed that she had “given up politics,” but she kept praising Mitt Romney.

Heaton declared her intention to leave the Republican Party and register as an independent voter on January 6, 2021, which happened to be the day of the attack on the US Capitol that year.

Controversy

Despite later publicly recanting these opinions, Heaton used her position as a major donor to St. James School in 2003 to prevent the implementation of a diversity and inclusion assembly.

A student with two gay adoptive parents experienced bullying because of her parents’ sexual orientation. The assembly was planned for it.

If the assembly went forward, Heaton threatened to stop providing financial support to the school.
